South Scarle Community Centre - St Helena's Church
Come and celebrate summer solstice with your local community in Collingham. Solstice marks the midway point in our calendar between spring and autumn equinox and signifies turn of the wheel of the year towards harvest. Slow down and turn awareness inwardly with a deeply reflective yin practice, focussing on sensation, breath and spaciousness in the body and mind. This is a floor based yoga practice with extended holds in postures and plenty of time to begin to notice the subtle shifts in both energy and physicality. The yin yoga section will be followed by a gong bath, an immersion in sacred sound that can transport you to a deeply meditative state. Gongs promote a sense of well being and inner peace, with participants bathed in the sound of the gongs often experiencing feelings of timelessness, floating, visions or colours. The deep resonance of the gongs affects the body on a cellular level realeasing tension and stress by sonic massage. The gong bath will be followed by a light supper, hot drink and cake in the allotment cafe next door. There will be time to connect with your yoga community and enjoy the energy of solstice together. Tickets £32 to include food

What on Earth is a Gong Bath?! My first gong bath was in 1998 at Glastonbury Festival, an experience that marked the start of my transition into working within the healing arts. I made the decision to train with Gongs and bring this beautiful form of sound healing to Sacred Garden in 2017 and have loved every moment of it since! Gong Baths completely immerse, or bathe, you in sound, facilitating a space in which you can explore your subconscious and could be described as a form of sound meditation. Each experience of a Gong Bath will be unique and people are often presented with the experience that they need in the moment. Some people fall asleep, some experience visions, some see colour, others have physical sensations. Gong Baths usually last for just over an hour. Participants lay on a yoga mat or padded mat or can be seated for the duration of the Gong Bath. After settling in with some breath work or guided relaxation the gongs will be played alongside a variety of instruments including; shruti box, crystal singing bowls, metal singing bowls, drums and the voice. Playing the gongs creates a vast soundscape that is profoundly moving. The vibrations from the gongs can reduce stress by affecting autonomic balance, encouraging activation of the parasympathetic nervous system which is responsible for our rest, digestion and healing. The sound and frequency of the gongs during a gong bath wash over participants and may evoke feelings of relaxation, calm and balance whilst inviting the listener into a state of openness in which to process subconscious thoughts or feelings. This spontaneous meditative state induced by the gongs creates a sense of expansion and deeper awareness, and can be a truly amazing experience! Following a gong bath people often report increased feelings of wellbeing, contentment and balance, improved sleep quality, reduction in feelings of stress or anxiety alongside other physical benefits.
